Taro Okamoto:
Embracing Chaos in Japanese Graphic Design
As a Japanese graphic designer based in Melbourne, I often lean towards minimalist design principles. However, Taro Okamoto is a compelling exception to this approach.
Born in Kawasaki in 1911, Okamoto was deeply influenced by his time in Paris during the late 1920s. He studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts, immersing himself in the avant-garde movements of the time. This experience profoundly shaped his artistic vision, leading him to embrace the philosophy that "art is an explosion."
Returning to Japan, Okamoto became renowned for his bold, expressive works that often incorporated elements of Japanese culture and mythology. His most iconic creation, the Tower of the Sun, stands as a testament to his belief in the power of art to provoke and inspire.
The Taro Okamoto Memorial Museum is in Minami-Aoyama, Tokyo. The museum, housed in his former home and studio, offers an intimate glimpse into his creative process. It's a must-visit for anyone interested in Japanese graphic design and art.
