Japanese Horror Manga Artist | Kazuo Umezu
Kazuo Umezu (1936–2024) was a pioneering force in Japanese horror manga, earning the moniker "Godfather of Horror Manga." His works, including The Drifting Classroom and Hebi Onna (Snake Woman), are celebrated for their unsettling narratives and unique art style. Umezu's influence extends beyond manga, inspiring creators like Junji Ito and leaving a lasting impact on the genre.
What sets Umezu's style apart is his juxtaposition of the innocent aesthetics of shōjo manga, characterised by large, expressive eyes, with grotesque and surreal horror elements. This contrast creates a subtle yet profound sense of unease, making his works both captivating and chilling.
In my early teens, I encountered Hebi Onna and was struck by its dark themes and emotional depth. While my mother found it unsettling, I was drawn to the complexity and nuance of Umezu's storytelling.
Umezu's legacy continues to resonate in contemporary horror manga, and his influence is evident in the works of artists like Junji Ito, who has cited Umezu as a significant inspirationeads - isn’t he just the coolest 80 something year old!
