Osamu Tezuka
In 1967, Osamu Tezuka, the "Godfather of Manga," launched COM (コム, Komu), a monthly manga magazine published by his company Mushi Production. Designed as a platform for avant-garde and experimental works, COM allowed Tezuka and other artists to explore mature themes and unconventional storytelling, marking a significant departure from the mainstream manga of the time.
The magazine's tagline, "A specialty manga publication for the manga elite," reflected its focus on artistic innovation and its appeal to a more discerning audience. COM featured seven arcs of Tezuka's renowned series Phoenix, showcasing his evolving narrative style and artistic experimentation.
Visually, COM stood out with its bold layouts, dynamic panel compositions, and a mix of traditional and modern design elements. The magazine's design mirrored the content's avant-garde nature, offering readers a visually stimulating experience that complemented the innovative storytelling.
Although COM ceased publication in 1972, its legacy endures. It played a pivotal role in the development of modern manga, influencing countless artists and designers. For contemporary creators like myself, Tezuka's willingness to push boundaries and embrace artistic risk is a constant source of inspiration.
