Dr Slump Arare Chan by Toriyama Akira

Japanese art and design from my childhood is a major inspiration of mine. In this series, I share the creators who have shaped my idea of great art and design, and whose work continues to influence my projects today.

Akira Toriyama and Dr. Slump

Before Dragon Ball, Akira Toriyama created the fantastic manga comic and TV anime Dr. Slump ✒️. Personally, I find his light-hearted and humorous work from the 1980s far more enjoyable than the over-the-top action his later series became known for. Toriyama’s early style, with its playful character designs and imaginative worlds, reflects a sense of fun and creativity that I try to carry into my own graphic design and illustration work.

Style Evolution and Influence

Over the years, his drawing style has become busier and more detailed, which mirrors broader trends in manga and anime as a whole. Revisiting his early work reminds me of the importance of simplicity, charm, and storytelling in visual design; qualities that can make illustrations and branding truly memorable.

Bringing Inspiration to My Work

By studying these classics, I’ve been able to bring elements of Japanese minimalism, humor, and character-driven design into my own projects, whether I’m creating illustrations, logos, or visual identities for clients. Sharing these inspirations is my way of connecting my past experiences with the creative decisions I make today.
